This week is finally come to the end. Friday is usually an easy day. We do not have First Year Experience. Only Math, Gastronomy, and Nutrition are on schedule.
Math was review for all what we have learned during the semester. It's useful, but boring at the same time. Useful because that will help to prepare to the final exam. Boring, because nothing new...
At Gastronomy we discussed organic food, sustainability, and
locality. Organic food are very questionable topic. Organic food suppose to be free from some fertilizers and substances. However, the classification we have here in US is quite unclear, for me it's playing with language. We have 100% organic, certified organic, and simply organic. Technically, you do not have to certify product as organic, you may just state 'organic' on the label. If you state 'organic', from USDA definition, that means that you use more than 70% organic ingredients. What are the remaining 30% is a question.
Nutrition was about weight management and issues related to a healthy weight. For me it was a shock to see statistic for the USA from 1984 to 2008 regarding obesity and type 2 diabetes. In 1984 some states did not even have statistics about obesity, states with the worst data had around 15% obese people. In 2008 all states had data and about 25% of all states had more 30% obese people. There are some explanations why that happened, but it's difficult to say for sure why. The new for me was that the Bible belt we know from the election terminology is also called Diabetes belt.
