Day seven - liberal arts

Cucumber - is it vegetable or fruit?

Last week on Thursday, I came here to start learning at the Culinary Institute of America. Last week everything was new and amount of information we received seemed overwhelming.

After one week at school, everything does not look like new. Many things are quite familiar now. Yes, we are not as familiar with kitchen as we should be. But this is simply a matter of time.

Today is the day for
the liberal art classes. Yes, we have to learn not only cooking but subjects around.

In the morning we had 'Math for the professional kitchen class'. So far no problem. And I feel this is necessary, especially because we have to convert pounds to ounces to gallons and quarts. At least now I know that 1 cup is 8 ounces; 1 pint is two cups; 1 gallon is 4 quarts and so on (always was confused about the Imperial system).

The other class was 'Product knowledge' and it was may be no so interesting for now, but definitely useful. However a bit confusing. What is the fruits and what is the vegetables? I've never heard that fruits is the part of the plant related to reproduction and vegetables is everything else what is not fruit and seed (let me correct myself - the second part of the sentence was new for me). So technically, tomato, pumpkin and cucumber are fruits and not vegetable. Probably there will be another definition waiting for us.

Third class today was about food and safety. Not so cool, but kind of required for us. The last things you want in the restaurant is the sick customer. So we have way to go, and at the end of this class we have to pass food safety exam and obtain certificate.

The last class was disaster called 'First year experience'. This is class how and what to do during your first year in a college to get the most. Anyway, I have to get pass grade at this class.

Almost forget one of the chef gave a lecture today. It was out of curriculum, but really interesting. The chef is going to compete at the end of January in France in Coupe de Monde de la Patisserie. His speciality is chocolate and he was chosen through competition in USA. Now he is a member of the USA 2013 team. His piece was AMAZING, really beautiful. Sorry to my readers, can't post picture now (have to wait till the end of competition, but promise - at the end of January will publish picture).
So day seven was not remarkable. What can I do?
