Day twenty two

Time for quiz. What is on  the picture?

TGIF. Friday is a good thing. Short day of classes, as we do not have first year experience and our classes are over by 11:45. Then lunch and then trip to San Francisco.

The weather was great today, sunny and really warm. My trip to San Francisco was quite long today. I had to pick up prescription for the cat at San Rafael, then I went to the Berkeley Bowl to buy food and then home (San Francisco). Also I got my knives back with my name engraved (it was another stop on my way), so now they won't be mixed up.

At math I was confused today
with a simple ingredient, which is water. In the Eastern world we always consider that 1 liter of water weight 1 kilograms. Here in USA we consider that 1 fluid ounce weight 1 ounce. And these two equivalencies give different result. This is understandable, because 1 fl.oz is 29.59 ml and 1 oz is 28.35 gr. If you have small amount that does not matter. But if the quantity is quite big (let's say 2.3 litres) the difference in these methods is around 350 grams.

Product knowledge was about peppers, eggplants and squashes. Again, huge varieties of each of these vegetables. Peppers are sweet and hot (referred as chillies). Squashes are soft shell and hard shell. What I did not know that sweet bell pepper we see at market in three colours (green, yellow and red) are actually two varieties (not three). These peppers are all green and then some of them become yellow and some red.

Hot peppers are all different not only in shapes and colours, but the more important how hot they are. There is Scoville scale - an measurement for peppers, how hot they are. This scale runs from zero (bell pepper) to 15 mio (pure capsaician - chemical responsible for this heat). For culinary use it's not convenient, because it's difficult t imagine what does it mean 200.000 Scoville and how it's different from 1 mio. More useful, but may be not so precise is a scale from 1 to 10.

Every day something new and interesting.

This Monday is a special project day. We have to find out some information regarding externship and also put together our thoughts about it. It is due 11 p.m. Monday.

Wish everybody great weekend!
