Day thirty nine

a courtesy of
Is alcohol high in calories?

We have started a new block  at school. Today we have two new subjects. The first one is Introduction to Gastronomy. The second one is Nutrition.

Gastronomy is very interesting. The only difficulties I can see now - it requires a lot of reading. I do mean a lot. That will be a challenge. I do like reading, but at my own pace. If I am tired, I like to close a book until tomorrow and then continue. With Gastronomy that does not work. And the reading is not simple.

With Nutrition is a bit easier, however it also requires reading, but a reasonable amount. That will be really useful to get knowledge about all nutrients, how to produce a nutritious meal and so on. The first class we just touched calories and basic nutrients. I was shocked to learn that alcohol
(which is not a nutrient by the way) is extremely high in calories. If 1 gr carbohydrates or protein contains 4 kcal, 1 gr of fat contains 9 kcal, but 1 gr alcohol (need to mention 100%) contains 7 kcal!!! So, if you drink 2 glasses of wine (150 ml each) with alcohol content 13%, you got 273 kcal! This is equivalent of consumption of 68 grams of protein. Wow...

At work there was a bit intense day. Another sous chef, everything was a bit intense (go-go-go!) and a positive side - we finished at 8 p.m. and not at 8:30 p.m.
I cooked acorn squash. Quite simple - cut in half, clean from seeds, cut to wedges, season (salt, pepper) and oil it, spread on baking sheet and bake. When ready - arrange on servings platters and place on the buffet table. It was really easy.
